Flapjack season 2

The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack premiered on June 5, 2008 on Cartoon Network. After more than a year, the last of the season 1 episodes aired last week.

No need to wait for Season 2 to start, because it starts tonight at 8 PM e/p. This should be good.

(oh, and new Chowder too, at 7:30 PM)

Selling another original

I've just put up a Chuck Asay original for sale on eBay. Bid here.

Juiced and Jazzed

I like this. It's a tribute to old rubber-hose style cartoons that was oh-so common back in the '20s and '30s.

See it here.

It should be safe for work, although there are LOTS of gratuitous panty shots...not that it's a bad thing ;)

Adventure Time

If you haven't been following the Adventure Time production blog, you're missing out. Lots of goodies there, including a couple of storyboards. I love it when they do a blog like that.

Speaking of Cartoon Network, Chowder and Flapjack are now airing earlier on Thursdays than it was last month (on 7:30 and 8 PM EST respectively)

Those toads

One of the series DePatie-Freleng did for United Artists' theatrical release was "Tijuana Toads", which featured two frogs (Toro and Pancho) who spoke with stereotypical Mexican accent. Here's one of the shorts:

Around the time this came out there was a controversy over a food mascot Frito Bandito from Mexican activists which led to the character fading away. However, since the Toads shorts were theatrically released (and I might add that they were made from 1969 to 1972, long after theatrical cartoons were no longer in demand) they were able to get away with it.

Well, not for long. They later showed up on network television (on NBC as part of their Saturday morning Pink Panther block) but DFE had to redub their voices to make them "Texas Toads". The dubbed version didn't seem to last, since the original theatrical version eventually did show up on syndication in the 1980s.

Was the redubbing justified? Is the Mexican accents that offensive? If anyone has anything to say, feel free.

Sound Imitation

When NBC picked up "The Ant and the Aardvark" as part of their Saturday morning Pink Panther show, DePatie-Freleng created new bumpers to air between the shorts. Here's one of them, where the Panther and the Aardvark compete in a sound imitation contest.

Hurts and Flowers

Thought I'd show this. This is a full-page ad for a DePatie-Freleng short "Hurts and Flowers", the second in the Roland and Rattfink series. It appeared on Variety on January 10, 1969.

This is very much a rarity. As far as I'm aware DFE never did an ad for any other shorts; there was a poster for "The Pink Phink", but otherwise that's it.
