Anyway, FoxTrot.com was a different website years ago than what it is now. For one thing, it had the extras page where they posted some of the proto-FoxTrot strips that Bill Amend sent to syndicates back in the '80s. Thanks to the wonders that is Internet archive, I've managed to find some.
To start off with, here's a sample of a comic strip Bill sent to syndicates before "FoxTrot". It was called "Bango Ridge" and it was about a explorer who was in a jungle full of talking animals. All the syndicates rejected it, but one encouraged him to come up with another.

With that note, Bill came up with the early version of "FoxTrot".

This is probably the only time you'll see Jason without his glasses.

At this point, Bill was getting a hang of his style. This is pretty identical to the version that was published in newspapers.
